Floris, family of British perfumers since 1730
Spanishman Juan Famenias Floris left Menorca for Montpellier (France), the Mecca of perfume in the 18th century, to learn the secrets of fragrance creation. From there, he embarked on his great adventure to London, buying 89 Jermyn Street, where he set up his barbershop and comb manufacturing business in 1730. Juan Floris, nostalgic for the aromas of his home in Menorca, also began to recreate these fragrances in the back room of No. 89, mixing essential oils as he had learned in Montpellier. The blend of ingredients, imported from Europe, was made individually for each client and the formulas were recorded so that they could be reproduced according to their needs. These few fragrances have remained at the heart of Floris to this day as part of the Classic Collection.
With John Floris' entrepreneurial spirit - in 1730 perfumes were a real novelty and Jermyn Street was the epicenter of the gentry in London - and with his innovative vision when it came to creating personalized fragrances, the barbershop was transformed into an elegant space selling eau de toilette and exclusive accessories such as handmade combs imported from Menorca, shaving brushes, hat pins or toothbrushes.
Floris turned 285 years old in 2015. It is the oldest independent British perfumery family in the world and the only perfume house appointed to the Queen. John Floris' family is currently in its eighth and ninth generation. They run the business proudly and with the same premises at No. 89 Jermyn Street, employing their knowledge and building on the heritage of the art of fragrance from generation to generation, creating exquisite perfumes that stand the test of time and body care products.
