KINSKI The FragranceOn the big screen, the legendary German actor Klaus Kinski (October 18, 1926 - November 23, 1991) established himself working under the orders of director Werner Herzog in works that are now classics: Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972), Nosferatu (1979) and Fitzcarraldo (1982), a trilogy in which his performance pushed him to the brink of madness. In real life, Kinski was equally often electrifying. According to Peter Geyer, director of Kinski Productions, the company that manages the actor's legacy, his name comes to represent maverick and flamboyant thought leadership, a politically correct way to describe a man who was capable of shocking even his most liberal fellow actors. So how do you create a fragrance capable of capturing the character of such a complicated man? Geyer took on the challenge to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Kinski's death. He was not interested in a simple marketing campaign around the actor's name, but in a luxury product containing something rare, precious, mysterious. So he thought of Berlin-based perfumer Geza Schoen, who had earned a major worldwide reputation with the Escentric Molecules fragrances, which embodied precisely these same qualities. Kinski Productions sponsored the creative team at Escentric Molecules (Geza Schoen, Jeff Lounds and Me Company) to bring KINSKI perfume to life - a lush, decadent scent with a powerful top note that includes cassis, juniper and castoreum. The heart has a powerful accent of oceanic notes, inspired by the actor's love for the sea. Finally, a base of animalic and woody notes serve to reflect his sensual, almost wild sensuality. The ingredients for the KINSKI fragrance have reason to be when looking at the actor's lifestyle, says Schoen. He was excessive, exuberant, vicious. Immediately, I thought of something animalic, dirty, although in my creations there is always something clean as well. It fits perfectly with Klaus Kinski's own ambivalence. Was he a genius or just a madman? Who knows. It also fits with our strange collection of conceptual fragrances. The strange collection Geza Schoen refers to is made up of the six members of the Escentric family plus A Beautiful Mind , the new series he's working on with Jeff Lound and Me Company. And thanks to the fabulous design work done by the latter, in addition to the scent, the image of the packaging also takes center stage. Kinski was also famous for his manic eyes and strange look, says Paul White (MeCompany). I found a black and white image of Kinski as a young man, possibly a passport photo from the 1940s, in which he had the same hypnotic look. But to be able to use this old image, I had to find a way to fit it with a contemporary fragrance. So, in a perfect marriage of film noir atmosphere and experimental method, Paul White, treated the old photograph with the latest 3-D technology and the result is an expressionistic interpretation of the actor's face, through the prism of the decadent seventies, the decade in which Kinski's life and art combined to create the magic that still moves audiences today. Peter Geyer was fascinated by KINSKI the fragrance and is convinced that Kinski the man would be too. He would have loved to be used as a luxury brand, says Geyer. Besides, he was addicted to the idea of using perfumes long before the men's fragrance market came into its own in the late 1980s. He could easily have changed perfumes as often as he changed his luxury cars. A biographical fact: in three years, in the late 1960s, Kinski bought sixteen cars: three Maseratis, seven Ferraris and six Rolls Royces. Perhaps if
